The Legend of the Nine-Colored Deer

Inspired by the ancient Dunhuang cave murals of Mogao Cave 257 and the timeless tale of Lady Lotus from "Za Bao Zang Jing," The Legend of the Nine-Colored Deer is a breathtaking theatrical production that brings to life a 5,000-year-old fable along the Silk Road. This mesmerizing play explores universal themes of sacrifice, compassion, and morality through the mystical journey of the Nine-Colored Deer—a divine creature who creates lotus blooms with every step. Featuring stunning choreography, lavish costumes, and dramatic storytelling, the production blends ancient Dunhuang artistry with modern performance to captivate audiences of all ages. Zhi Jun Yang – Independent Dancer and Choreographer

He has performed and choreographed widely, including on Hunan TV’s Dancing Star and major productions like Dream of the Red Chamber, The 24 Solar Terms, and Ink Dance, blending tradition with innovation.

Qian Fu – Dance Choreographer

Credits include: The Secret Realm of Longcheng at the Chengde International Circus; musical Southward, Southward in Aral, Xinjiang; dance drama Jiang Ziya; original musical Laha Susu; and the Closing Ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Dong Mei – Dance Artist

Dong Mei, trained at Beijing Dance Academy with an MFA, has won top dance awards and performed globally. She received China’s Wenhua Award and debuted her solo concert in Vancouver in 2014.

Vivien Dang – Dance Artist

Vivien Dang, a Vancouver-based dance artist, studies at SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts. She blends Contemporary and traditional Chinese movement, with lead roles in the Vancouver Spring Show since 2009 and in The Legend of the Nine-Coloured Deer.

Clara Xu

Rachel – Dance Artist

Rachel, a University of British Columbia student, has danced with Motion Artistry for over fourteen years. She has performed in the Vancouver Spring Show since 2009 and returns as a lead in The Legend of the Nine-Colored Deer, bringing Chinese cultural heritage to life with passion and stage presence.

Tami Troncoso – Dance Artist

Tamara Francisca Troncoso Lamilla, Vancouver-based dancer and choreographer, founded Latinxbloom to promote Latin-style heels. Trained in Chile and the U.S., she has 20+ years of stage experience with artists like Denise Rosenthal and SECH, worked with brands including Nike, and performed twice with Snoop Dogg.

Valeria Monem – Dance Artist

Val Monem, Mexican dancer trained in hip hop, jazz, ballet, and Latin heels, with experience in musical theatre and artistic gymnastics. Continually exploring new styles to expand her artistic range.

Alicia Taot

Alicia Tao, BNU music graduate and Bellini Competition prizewinner, is known for her clear, agile voice. She has performed leading operatic and concert roles, including Rusalka, La Bohème, and Roméo et Juliette, earning praise for her artistry and stage presence.

Frantz De Rycke – Opera Singer, Actor, Voice-over Artist

Vancouver-based performer appearing as the Emperor King in The Legend of the Nine-Colored Deer. Notable roles include Sarastro (The Magic Flute) and von Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus). He has performed with Vancouver Opera and internationally in Paris, trained in voice, piano, and acting, and speaks multiple languages.

Li Xin – Violinist

Li Xin is an accomplished violinist known for her rich, expressive sound and versatile style. She has performed in numerous solo and chamber music concerts, spanning a wide range of musical genres and captivating audiences with her artistry.

Lamondance – Contemporary Dance Company

Based in Vancouver, Lamondance has created 92 commissioned works since 2009 under artistic director Davi Rodrigues. The company collaborates with local and international choreographers to produce contemporary dance that is physically daring, emotionally engaging, and artistically captivating.

Motion Artistry – Dance Academy

Founded in 2005 in Vancouver, Motion Artistry trains dancers in classical Chinese and contemporary styles while developing performance, leadership, and professionalism. Students gain stage experience and competitive training, with alumni including Miss Universe Canada Amelia Tu.

Rob Kitsos, dancer, choreographer, and SFU professor, has performed globally, created 100+ works blending dance with multimedia, and taught at top institutions worldwide.

Juan Wu / Chief Costume Design

Graduated from Beijing Dance Academy in 2016, she leads a costume studio and designs for major national shows, blending aesthetics with Chinese cultural roots to bridge Eastern and Western styles.

Davi Rodrigues / Art Director

Davi Rodrigues, Brazilian-born Canadian choreographer and Artistic Director of Lamondance, has 30+ years creating high-energy, award-winning works and founded the Lamondance Arts Society.

Master Xuanling / Daoist Master

Master Xuanling (Vicky Tu) blends Daoist wisdom with modern wellness, creating the Daoist Energy Healing System and Daoist Meditation Program, and founded DaoZen Life in North America.

The Vancouver Spring Show™, presented by the Spring Show Production Organization Society, is a Vancouver-based multicultural non-profit dedicated to promoting cultural diversity through the performing arts. Since its inception in 2015, the annual event has brought together diverse communities to celebrate global heritage, artistic excellence, and cross-cultural exchange. Now in its 10th year, the Vancouver Spring Show continues to bridge the past and present, showcasing stories that resonate with universal values.
